AI/ML is now India's fastest-growing hire, and the talent to fill it is still forming.

AI/ML is the single fastest-growing hiring sector in India, up 37% year-on-year, and it leads every other sector we track. Inside it, agentic AI is the breakout, with agent-orchestration postings up an estimated 300% in fifteen months. The catch is supply: India holds an estimated 12,000 to 18,000 active agentic AI practitioners against projected demand of more than 50,000 by 2027. This edition maps where the demand sits, which skills clear the screen, and what they cost.

Key Findings

What the AI/ML data is actually saying.

Five findings worth surfacing this edition. The full report carries the sub-segment growth, the role-by-role headcount, the city map and the salary bands behind them; these are the ones we'd flag in a leadership conversation.

01

AI/ML now leads every sector.

AI/ML is the single fastest-growing hiring sector in India, up 37% year-on-year, and it leads every other sector we track. This is no longer an emerging theme; it's the centre of gravity for technical hiring, with total AI demand growing an estimated 32 to 40% year-on-year.

02

Agentic AI is the breakout.

Inside AI/ML, one category stands out. Agentic AI, the work of building systems that plan and act on their own, is the breakout: postings requiring LangChain, CrewAI or agent-orchestration skills rose an estimated 300% between January 2025 and March 2026. Gartner projects 40% of enterprise apps will embed task-specific AI agents by end-2026, up from under 5% in 2025.

03

The constraint is supply, not demand.

India holds an estimated 12,000 to 18,000 active agentic AI practitioners today, against a widely-cited projection of more than 50,000 needed by 2027, so current supply covers only about a third of where demand is heading. The pool is growing an estimated 60 to 70% a year, but it's young: most practitioners have under 18 months of hands-on experience, and there is almost no deep senior bench to hire from.

Pay runs high, and carries a premium.

AI/ML roles carry a 20 to 45% salary premium over equivalent general software roles at the same level, and remote seniors working for US firms earn a ₹60 to 80 LPA equivalent. Bands run from ₹5 to 12 LPA for a fresher to ₹20 to 40 LPA and above for an AI research scientist, with pay projected to grow 15 to 20% a year through 2030.

Demand has spread beyond core IT.

The pressure now reaches well beyond IT. BFSI and the GCCs are the most undersupplied, with the highest demand and fewest practitioners; IT and product firms are building internal teams; e-commerce and SaaS are hiring fast; and healthcare and pharma demand is emerging early and growing fast. It stays concentrated, though: Bengaluru alone accounts for about 45% of India's AI job postings, with Hyderabad and Pune close behind.
