Global Business ServicesGBS

Also known as: GBS

Global Business Services (GBS) is a way of organising the enterprise’s support and operational functions into one integrated, multi-functional delivery organisation rather than running them separately in each business unit or country. A GBS typically brings together finance and accounting, human resources, procurement, IT, and other shared processes under common governance, standardised ways of working, and shared technology.

GBS is the evolution of the older “shared services” idea. Where a shared services centre usually handles one function in one region, a GBS spans multiple functions, multiple regions, and often multiple delivery locations — some captive, some outsourced — coordinated as a single global operation. The aim is not only cost efficiency but consistency, better data, and end-to-end process ownership across the company.

In the Indian context, a GBS and a GCC frequently overlap. Many multinationals run their global finance, HR, and procurement operations from an Indian centre that also carries the GCC label, and a large GCC may sit within, or act as, the company’s GBS organisation. The distinction is one of emphasis: GBS describes the operating model and the breadth of functions served, while GCC describes the captive centre itself. Staffing a GBS calls for process-and-transformation leaders alongside deep functional specialists, since the mandate is to run and continuously improve enterprise-wide operations.

Frequently asked questions

What is Global Business Services (GBS)?

Global Business Services is an operating model that combines support functions such as finance, HR, procurement, and IT into one integrated organisation serving the whole company across regions, usually with a strong offshore component.

How is GBS different from shared services?

A shared services centre typically delivers one function in one region, while GBS integrates multiple functions across multiple regions and locations under single governance. GBS is generally seen as the more mature, enterprise-wide evolution of shared services.

Is a GBS the same as a GCC?

Not exactly. GBS refers to the operating model and the range of functions delivered, whereas a GCC refers to the company-owned offshore centre. In India the two often overlap, with a GCC housing or acting as the company’s GBS organisation.

What functions does a GBS typically cover?

A GBS commonly covers finance and accounting, human resources, procurement, IT services, and other transactional and knowledge processes, coordinated centrally to standardise how they are delivered across the enterprise.
